When choosing a prostate formula it is vital to know what really is important. Many prostate formulas contain unproven ingredients. What is unproven? An unproven ingredient is an ingredient that has not been studied in a validated clinical trial and the study has not been published in a journal respected by the medical community (i.e. your treating physician).

The information provided here is to provide an understanding of how clinical studies are published in publications. It is with the express understanding that this information does not suggest or infer that the journals listed have published studies that infer benefit to any prostate formula or ingredient.

In the medical community there are many journals that publish clinical studies that show whether or not a product works. The problem is that many journals will publish any study even studies that clearly give an unfair advantage to the manufacturer's ingredient being studied. The medical community in the United States, Canada, and European Union all consider the following medical publications respectable and a valuable source of reliable information. These are in no particular order of importance or relevance. And this list is by no means all inclusive.

The Lancet

The New England Journal of Medicine

The British Medical Journal

Clinical information regarding a product's effectiveness means nothing if the clinical study or trial was poorly designed or controlled. The above medical journals look at study design and controls to make sure that the data reported is objective. If a study does not meet their degree of acceptable standards it is not published. It's as simple as that. Many prostate supplement formulas contain everything but the kitchen sink. And these extras provide no benefit and could actually be harmful. The first rule in medicine is "First do no harm" and we are all familiar with the saying "keep it simple."

It is also important to note that despite the fact that a dietary supplement is natural recent and past clinical data has shown that some ingredients when taken in high dosages can actually be harmful or cause unwanted side effects.

First let's look at Selenium. The maximum daily recommended dosage is 200 micrograms from all sources. Dosages that exceed this in the human body could have unwanted side effects and at higher dosages be toxic. Most people naturally get between 60 and 100 micrograms of selenium daily from dietary sources. The National Institutes of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements clearly establishes the adult Recommended Dietary Allowances and DV (daily value) for selenium is 70 micrograms (ug or mcg). Therefore, when taking a supplement with selenium it is essential to not exceed the maximum recommended daily dose. Dosages exceeding 200 mcg/day, inclusive of normal dietary sources, should only do so under the direction of a qualified medical professional. Symptoms of Selenium excess include nausea and vomiting, loss of hair and nails, a skin rash, and nerve damage. The diagnosis is based on symptoms, particularly rapid hair loss. Selenium helps protect cells against damage by free radicals, which are reactive by-products of normal cell activity. Selenium is also necessary for the thyroid gland to function normally. A little is good does not mean "more is better."

Second let's look at vitamin D. There are two forms of vitamin D that are important for nutrition: Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol): This form is synthesized from plants and yeast precursors. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): This form is the most active form of vitamin D. It is formed in the skin when the skin is exposed to direct sunlight. The most common food source is fortified foods, mainly cereals and dairy products. Vitamin D3 is also present in fish liver oils and fatty fish. Vitamin D is stored mainly in the liver. Vitamin D2 and D3 are not active in the body. Both forms must be processed (metabolized) by the liver and kidneys into an active form called calcitrol. This active form promotes absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine. Calcium and phosphorus, which are minerals, are incorporated into bones to make them strong and dense (a process called mineralization). New studies suggest that older adults may need more vitamin D than the current recommended dietary allowance or even the recommended upper limits. In fact, they may need 1000 to 2000 IU daily. Taking such high dosages amounts should be done only after consulting a doctor. Older people who take high amounts of vitamin D supplements need to have periodic blood tests to check their levels of calcium, vitamin D, and parathyroid hormone.

Blood tests to measure vitamin D can confirm the deficiency. Taking very high daily doses of vitamin D—for example, 50 or more times the recommended daily allowance (RDA)—over several months can cause toxicity and a high calcium level in the blood. Early symptoms are loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, followed by excessive thirst, weakness, nervousness, and high blood pressure. Because the calcium level is high, calcium may be deposited throughout the body, particularly in the kidneys, blood vessels, lungs, and heart. The kidneys may be permanently damaged and malfunction, resulting in kidney failure. It is wise to note the actual amount of vitamin D you are ingesting before initiating supplementation. In the United States and Canada commercially available liquid milk (but not cheese or yogurt) is fortified. Breakfast cereals may also be fortified.

What is "Pharmaceutical Grade"? There are several criteria by which a pharmaceutical grade claim is judged. The product must be in excess of 99% purity with no binders, fillers, excipients, dyes, or unknown substances.  It is impossible to make a tablet or caplet without an excipient or binder. Tablets and caplets are usually very hard consisting of binders and heavy coatings in order to maintain their shape. Manufacturers produce tablets and caplets because they are economical. Capsules tend to be the industry's favorite. The capsule is usually made of gelatin allowing easy breakdown of the nutrients inside. For the vegetarian there are capsules made from vegetable sources although they tend to cost more. Best Prostate® uses a 100% Vegetable Capsule.

GRAS equals (generally recognized as safe) by the U.S. FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). This is a rating of a particular ingredient as reviewed by the FDA. All products will have a list of "other ingredients" below the "Supplements Facts" box. These ingredients would include binders, fillers, excipients, dyes, or unknown substances.

"Knock Off Product" This would be a product that wants to copy the exact formula of another product on the market. Unfortunately some manufacturers feel threatened by competition and the possibility that their product is less than. Facts are facts and defamatory unprofessional allegations are another. The formula for Best Prostate® does not contain the identical formula of any other prostate formula.

We make Best Prostate® as we do because we believe that you deserve to have a product that does not contain extra unproven fillers or ingredients or unsafe levels of ingredients. The quality and quantity of the ingredients in Best Prostate® meet or exceed the guidelines as established by the NIH (National Institutes of Health), ODS (Office of Dietary Supplements), and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and compliant with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations).
